Runway - Privacy Policy

Runway is built to keep your money private. This policy explains what stays on your device, the little that may leave it, and why. It applies to the Runway app for iPhone and its widgets and share extension ("Runway"), made by [Developer name] ("we", "us").

The short version

Your plan stays on your iPhone. Your income, balances, debts, bills, taxes, wishlist, photos and name are stored on your device. We do not have a server that holds them, and we cannot see them.
There is no account. You never sign up or sign in, and we never ask for your name, email address or phone number.
We count a few things anonymously through Google Firebase — such as whether the introduction was finished, how many wants are on a list, and how many people subscribe — to understand what is working. Never an amount, an income, a balance or anything that says who you are, and you can turn it off in Settings.
We do not sell your information, and we do not track you across other companies' apps or websites.

1. What stays on your device

Everything you enter into Runway is stored on your device, in storage that belongs to the app:

incomes, pay dates and tax settings;
accounts, balances, debts, interest rates and bills;
your wishlist, including names, prices, links, notes and pictures;
expenses you log and the history of money moving between your accounts;
the name and picture you choose for yourself, and your app settings.

Runway uses this only to work out your plan on the device. The widgets read a summary that the app writes to storage shared between the app and its widgets on the same device.

If you use iCloud Backup or back up your device to a computer, Apple may include Runway's data in that backup under Apple's own privacy policy. We do not have access to your backups.

2. What may leave your device

Anonymous usage counts

To learn which parts of Runway help people and which need work, Runway sends basic, anonymous usage counts to Google Firebase (Google Analytics for Firebase and Cloud Firestore). They are:

how far through the introduction you got, and whether you finished it;
whether the Runway Pro screen was shown, what opened it, and whether a plan was bought (and which);
how many wants are on your list and how many you have bought;
whether you set a profile picture;
whether you opened, shared or saved the picture of your list;
how many expenses you have logged, and how often you open the Financial Balance screen;
app version, device model, iOS version and language.

Each install is known only by a random anonymous ID created by Firebase Authentication when the app first opens. There is no account, and the ID is not linked to your name, email, Apple Account or advertising identifier. These counts never include your income, balances, debts, tax, prices, the names of things on your list, what you spend on, or anything else that describes your finances.

Google processes this data for us under its Firebase terms and does not use it to advertise to you. We use it only to improve Runway, never to build a profile of you, and we do not sell it.

You can turn this off at any time in Settings › Your data › Share anonymous usage. When it is off, Runway sends no usage counts at all.

Settings fetched from Firebase

Runway also downloads a few settings from Firebase Remote Config — such as links to our social media pages and our support email address — so they can change without an app update. The request carries nothing from your plan.

Advertising attribution

If we advertise Runway, we may use Apple's privacy-preserving attribution technology (such as AdAttributionKit or SKAdNetwork) to learn how many installs came from an advertisement. Apple reports this in aggregate, without telling us or the ad network who you are.

Runway does not use your device's advertising identifier — the analytics library it includes has no code to read it — and does not track you across apps and websites owned by other companies. If that ever changes, Runway will ask your permission through Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt first, and nothing will happen unless you allow it.

Purchases

Runway Pro is sold through Apple's App Store. Apple processes your payment; we never receive your card details, name or Apple Account details. Apple provides the app with a record of what was purchased and when, which stays on your device and is used only to unlock Runway Pro. Apple also gives us aggregate sales and subscription reports that do not identify you.

Links you add

When you add something from a link — pasted in, or shared to Runway from another app — Runway requests that web page to read the name, price and picture it publishes, and downloads the picture to keep on your device. That request goes directly to the website, just as it would if you opened the page yourself. It includes the ordinary information any web request carries, such as your IP address, but nothing from your plan. The website's own privacy policy applies to that request. In the same way, if you give Runway the web address of a picture instead of choosing one from your library, the picture is loaded from that website when it is shown.

Reading a picture you choose

Add from a Screenshot reads a picture and fills in the name, the price and the photograph for you — one you pick from your library, or one you share to Runway from another app. It happens in one of two ways, and the screen doing it tells you which every time.

On your iPhone. The picture is read on the device — Apple's own text recognition finds the words, Apple Intelligence works out which of them are the name and the price, and the object is cut out of the picture. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is sent anywhere.

By an AI service. Where Runway is set up to use one, that single picture is sent to an AI provider — currently OpenAI — which reads it and sends back the name, the price and which part of the picture is the thing. Only that one picture and the instruction to read it are sent. Nothing from your plan goes with it: no income, no balances, no debts, no other pictures, no name, no email, and no identifier for you or your device beyond the ordinary information any web request carries, such as your IP address. The provider's own privacy terms apply to that request, and their policy is not to use content sent through their developer interface to train their models. Runway keeps the answer on your device and keeps no copy of the picture anywhere else.

This only ever happens for a picture you choose — picked in Runway, or shared to it — at the moment you choose it. Runway never reads your photo library on its own, and never sends any other picture — the photographs on your list, or the one you set as your own face — anywhere.

Crash reports

If you have chosen to share analytics with app developers in your iPhone's settings, Apple may send us crash reports and diagnostic information about Runway. Apple does not identify you in these reports. You can turn this off in Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements.

Things you choose to share

When you save a copy of your plan, or share a picture of your list, Runway hands the file or picture to whatever you choose — AirDrop, Files, Messages, email. Where it goes from there is up to you and the service you pick.

3. Permissions Runway may ask for

Notifications — payday reminders and countdown milestones are scheduled on your device by iOS. No notification server is involved.
Location — only if you tap the button to fill in your region. It is read once on the device to find your country and province or state; the coordinates are discarded straight away and only those short region codes are kept.
Photos — only the pictures you choose are copied into Runway. A picture you pick for Add from a Screenshot may be sent once to an AI service to be read, as described above; the screen says so while it happens.

You can change any of these in your iPhone's Settings at any time.

4. What we do not do

We do not sell or rent information about you.
We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, contacts or precise location.
We do not collect or infer your income, wealth, debts, spending or tax situation.
We do not use your information for targeted advertising, and we do not share it with data brokers.
We do not connect to your bank.

5. How long information is kept

Your plan stays on your device until you remove it or delete the app. Anonymous usage counts are kept for up to 14 months in Google Analytics and for as long as they are useful in our database; they are tied only to a random install ID, never to you. Turning off Share anonymous usage stops new counts being sent.

6. Children

Runway is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

7. Your choices and rights

Because we do not hold information that identifies you, there is normally nothing for us to look up, correct or delete. You remain in control of your plan on your device: you can edit it, export it, or delete it by removing the app. Depending on where you live, you may have rights under privacy laws such as Canada's PIPEDA, the EU and UK GDPR, or U.S. state privacy laws; if you have a question or request, contact us and we will help where we can.

8. Changes to this policy

If we change how Runway handles information — for example, when we add a new service provider — we will update this policy and the "Last updated" date. If a change is significant, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect.
